Powering the connected car: Faurecia Aptoide Automotive App Store

Faurecia Aptoide Automotive believes that high-performance infotainment systems will become a major pillar of the connected cars. Currently, the majority of existing in-vehicle infotainment systems support a reduced variety of apps that can be ‘mirrored’ from the phone. However, through the use of small displays and many disabled functionalities, the user experience is limited.

In order to utilize a truly connected experience, we developed a dedicated App Store for the Automotive industry, which is based on Android Automotive OS (AAOS) – a built-in operating system tailored for the car environment. As a result, the App Store takes all the learnings from the mobile Android App Development world and creates an ecosystem of Apps and services that fit the driver’s needs.

Standardization as Automotive App Ecosystem Enabler

In the past, Apps were scarcely seen in vehicles. The infotainment systems based on native Linux or QNX OS required custom-made software, making it difficult to develop and integrate new functionalities into the head units. With Android Automotive OS taking the industry by storm and gaining a predicted 50% share of new vehicles by 2025, a new standard seems to establish itself. AAOS bridges the gap for the car world to the high-speed lifecycle of consumer electronics by providing upgradability, scalability and increased time-to-market.

Where we are

Today, Faurecia Aptoide’s App Store is already the largest automotive app distribution channel. Our modular platform architecture is based on core and complementary components, providing a beneficial value proposition to both OEMs and content providers. While there are possibilities to tailor to OEM-specific needs in terms of infrastructure or payment possibilities, standardization is the underlying principle we follow. Moreover, the App Store is conceptualized as a meta-organization, much similar to a marketplace.

Platform reach is created through cross-OEM standardization in a white-label approach. Thus, the user data, as well as content or market-specific decisions, remain under OEM control. It is through this standardized and unified approach that the platform propels App Developers to a wide range of OEMs and car models. The onboarding of these content providers is frictionless and safeguarded through our self-serve platform, along with the tools, knowledge and support we provide to guide them towards Android Automotive OS.

Driver Safety and system security are our top priorities. We go above and beyond ensuring our Apps are ´Driver Safety´ compliant. Our Cybersecurity framework, penetration testing, audits and third party Apps validation ensures the App Store complies with the most strict automotive safety and security guidelines.

How we got there

Faurecia Aptoide was formed in 2019 as a joint venture between Faurecia Clarion Electronics and Aptoide. The automotive powerhouse Faurecia Clarion Electronics has been pioneering in-car Apps Markets since the early days of Android. Combined with Aptoide’s Mobile App Ecosystem know-how, the two companies form a strong and reliable OEM partner. Our product and internal standards are based on experience, customer requirements, regulations, market-specific country and international standards (such as NIST, FIPS, ISO).

As a platform ecosystem, content is rather orchestrated than managed. In fact, the strength of an App Store relies on the diversity, quality and relevance of the provided content. Thereby, we focus on providing the right tools for developers and OEMs to ensure delivering experiences that inspire and serve drivers and their passengers in the best possible way.

What we foresee for the future

We are creating a global scaling Apps’ ecosystem, supporting a wide variety of OEMs across multiple territories. It is our mission to provide drivers and passengers with the best in-car experience possible, further pushing the boundaries of immersive experiences in connected cars.

´Effective standards are non-prescriptive and efficiency logically leads towards standardization. From enabling voice connected services and single sign-on App Stores, all the way to the use of our payment platform, we support solutions that scale. With Faurecia Aptoide Automotive App Store, we provide the best content in the most standardized and efficient way to OEMs´ – Dr. Ralf Drauz, Managing Director Faurecia Clarion Europe GmbH
